About the role

We're a growing construction company of under 50 employees looking for our first dedicated HR professional. You'll own the full employee lifecycle, with a focus on recruiting skilled trades and field staff, handling employee relations and terminations, and keeping us compliant. This is a hands-on, one-person HR role for someone who's comfortable both in the office and on a jobsite. This an hybrid opportunity.

What you'll do

  • Run full-cycle recruiting for field and office roles: writing job postings, sourcing tradespeople, screening, interviewing, verifying certifications, and making offers
  • Manage onboarding, including I-9s, E-Verify, new-hire paperwork, and safety orientation coordination
  • Handle employee relations: investigate complaints, coach supervisors, and manage performance and disciplinary documentation
  • Plan and conduct terminations, including jobsite separations, with proper documentation and risk awareness
  • Administer drug and alcohol testing programs (pre-employment, post-incident, reasonable suspicion)
  • Support safety and workers' comp: injury reporting, OSHA recordkeeping, claims management, and return-to-work
  • Ensure correct worker classification (employee vs. 1099 subcontractor) and wage-and-hour compliance
  • Maintain personnel files, policies, and the employee handbook
  • Coordinate with our payroll/benefits provider on enrollments, changes, and employee questions
  • Track licenses, certifications, and required trainings for field staff

What we're looking for

  • 3-5 years of HR experience, including time as a generalist or one-person HR department
  • Hands-on experience with recruiting and terminations
  • Working knowledge of employment laws, I-9/E-Verify, FLSA, FMLA, and OSHA recordkeeping
  • Experience supporting hourly or field-based workforces
  • Comfortable working independently, making sound judgment calls, and knowing when to bring in legal counsel
  • Strong communication skills with both field crews and leadership
  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • Be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Effective listenign and written skills
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee information
  • Proficient in Microsoft office applications

Strongly preferred

  • HR experience in construction
  • Workers' comp claims and safety program experience
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
